The Clow Book

The crimson grimoire that holds the fifty-two elemental spirits of Clow Reed.

The Clow Book is a legendary grimoire created by the powerful sorcerer Clow Reed approximately 30 years ago in Hong Kong. Bound in deep red leather with an intricate golden clasp, it serves as the prison and repository for fifty-two magical cards known as the Clow Cards. Each card within its pages holds a unique elemental power or abstract concept, waiting to be summoned by their master.

Lore & Background

After Clow Reed passed away, he left the book behind, intending for it to remain dormant until a successor worthy of its power appeared. Stored in Fujitaka Kinomoto's home library, Sakura accidentally unlocked the seal in her father's study, inadvertently releasing the cards into the city. The book reacted to her magical potential by opening its seals, while Keroberos (Cerberus), the sentient guardian beast, emerged to guide her through the trials of capturing each card and eventually transforming them under her own unique magic to become the Sakura Cards.

In Their Own Story

The air in the room grew heavy with static as Sakura approached the dusty shelf high above the shrine altar. Her fingers trembled not from fear, but from a strange, magnetic pull emanating from the crimson volume resting there. As she reached out, the golden clasp clicked open on its own, revealing pages that seemed to shimmer with an inner light. A whisper of wind brushed her cheek, and the book felt less like an object and more like an old friend waking from a long sleep.

Reader's Guide

The Clow Book functions as both a prison and a summoning tool for the fifty-two Clow Cards. To use it, the wielder must possess the magical affinity recognized by the book's seal; otherwise, the cards cannot be released or returned. When a card is summoned, the user recites an incantation while holding the Staff of Sealing, which draws the specific card from the book into the real world. The book itself acts as a database of these powers, allowing the guardian to track which cards have been captured and which remain loose in the environment. Originally wielded by Clow Reed, the book eventually transferred its allegiance to Sakura Kinomoto after she proved her heart was pure enough to control such immense power. Under her care, the nature of the book evolved, eventually allowing the cards to be transformed into a new form that reflects Sakura's own magical signature.
